In our house, we have a gas fireplace. It came complete with a remote control...so crazy easy! No chopping or stacking firewood or even having to flip a switch for us! :) When we moved in, it was June and WAY to hot to use it...why have the fireplace and the A/C on, right??? So that winter was Garrett's first experience with it. In fact, we have rarely used it at all, but it looks nice and came with the house so why argue!
We always kept the remote up high...out of the reach of any little hands and apparently Garrett never knew it existed. Steve had told him once that you had to snap your fingers just right to turn it on. We always laughed at the way that our little boy would intently stand in front of the fireplace trying to make a just a tiny spark let alone a full-blown fire! We thought it was sooooo funny! This past winter, the subject came up again and though he was closer to being able to snap his fingers (he works on this talent all the time), he still couldn't produce any fire!
Today, Garrett had a few friends over and I walked out of my kitchen to find all three kids standing in front of the fireplace trying to snap their cute little fingers. Luckily none of them has mastered this skill yet, so our secret is still safe...but I couldn't help but run for my camera and try to conceal my laughter at the sight of all of them so intently trying to snap! So cute!
I guess we'll have to let Garrett in on our little secret sometime...he'd make a pretty pathetic scout snapping at his campfire to light it! The poor kid wouldn't make it in the wild and would be the laughing stock of his Boy Scouts troop! Maybe we'll work on fire-safety and reveal the existence of the magic remote once it gets cool enough to use the fireplace again...so yeah, probably next December!!! It does make for a great Christmas morning backdrop!

How cute! I love how innocent they are and how hard they work on the simple skills--Eliza's current one is whistling. Garrett is so handsome.
Whistling is a fun one...but just a warning...once they master it, you have a constant songbird nearby for weeks (maybe even months!) :) It's pretty cute - noisy but cute!
Ok, that is funny. We sure miss you in nursery! It is nice to know your family is doing well.
