Today, as we are getting out of the car after school - yes it is still so hot that I drive the 1/2 mile to pick him up, but that's the besides the point! I hear Garrett say this as I am opening Ethan's door to get him out of his carseat, "Mom, can I get a phone?" WHAT!?! The kid doesn't even talk on the regular phone and already he's asking for a cell phone? This was so out of character that I KNEW I must have heard him wrong! So out comes my baffled "WHAT did you say???" He repeats, "Can I get a phone" but this time he follows it up with "you know, so I can put it here in my phone pocket?" Seriously, his backpack is more equipped for anything techy than any of my bags or purses or television set. Of course, being probably the lamest family when it comes to anything techy, that's not too surprising! But really, when your kindergartner is wearing the same-sized backpack as a highschooler, I guess these things are bound to come up! Besides the crazy size issue - those packs are so big on those little kindergarten bodies!!! But, it gets kids thinking that they need the ipod for their nifty ipod holder and a cell phone for their great little phone pocket! Maybe I should start telling him that those are hotwheel car holders or g.i. joe pockets instead or a special compartment for his granola bars! How long do you think I could fool him??? Probably not long, huh?!?

We got the same question during Malia's kindergarten year because a couple of the kids had their own phones. We told her that she could absolutely get one as soon as she could afford to buy one and pay the monthly fees. At her current rate of 2.50 per week it should take her about two years to buy the phone (she only gets to spend 1 dollar of her allowance because the rest goes into savings, charity and tithing) and then to save enough for a minimum 30 per month fee she should save for another 6.5 years just to maintain if for 1 year. So in about 8.5 years (15.5 years old) she may be able to afford it. Hmmm...I guess at some point she should get a raise, but we still have a problem saving that dollar from week to week. Candy just looks to tempting. Haha.
Brig asks me all the time how he can call me from preschool if he needs to. I tell him he doesn't need to, and I hope there isn't anyone else he feels like he needs to call! That is crazy-I can't believe some kids have phones in kindergarten!
Porter uses his cell phone holder to house his rock collection. You know the ones he picks up at recess and on the way home from school. It's in the perfect location and it's the perfect size to store great treasure!
Cameron uses one of those pockets for the cover to her Healies (wait till he asks for a pair of those, good luck in Sams Club) and the other pocket she actually does put granola bars in. Just be sure to check all the pockets at the end of the school year. You'll be amazed where and what they cram in those things.
